I was driving a church congregation from Worcester to their main church in Paarl yesterday. We drove through a slam before getting to the church and the smell was not so good. As I think how poverty smells bad I suddenly remember that poverty and wealth is not about possession but the attitude of the heart.
Poverty is the “get-get” attitude. What comes to you stays with you. Wealth is connected to giving and generosity. If you compare it to water, poverty is a dam, what goes there stays there. No wonder it smells bad. Wealth is like a river. There is a flow.
So if poverty and wealth is a heart attitude, it is possible to have little yet being wealthy. Like the poor widow in the bible who gave the little she had. A lady here in Worcester runs a soup kitchen ministry in the poor community. She make less than $10 a week but she was feeding many children regularly for the last few years now.
In the other hand you can have more than enough of everything but your life have the bad smell of poverty because all you have in mind and in your heart is how to get more and how to keep what you got. There is nothing wrong having a lot but again it is the attitude of the heart.
We brought nothing when we came to earth and we will take nothing when we leave. I don’t know about you but as for me, I really want to live something worth to be remembered when I am gone. I will always have needs but I have chosen to live a life focused on others and what I can give instead of a life focused on me and my needs and what I can get.
